Early Childhood Educator

The educator's role is critical to the overall success of the preschool program. They are responsible for providing leadership within their individual classroom in all facets of the children’s well-being and education. They are responsible for maintaining a safe and nurturing environment, developing positive relationships and communications with families, maintaining a clean and well-organized classroom, and managing all of the various documentation required by the Tennessee Department of Human Services for Childcare.

What You'll Do

General Responsibilities

The duties of the Educator include, but are not limited to, the following:

  •  Is responsible for the day-to-day operations of his/her classroom and for following the guidelines of the overall program.
  • Assumes responsibility for knowing and following safety rules and proper procedures associated with the job; and,  supervises and ensures the safety and well-being of the children at all times.
  • Plans, implements and directs classroom activities which assist children in the development of age-appropriate skills, interests, and abilities.
  • Utilizes active teaching strategies which incorporate problem solving, critical thinking,  “leading edge” techniques and technology strategies, etc.
  • Adapts and modifies curriculum/instruction based on individual needs of children.
  • Prepares a monthly calendar for planning purposes and for distribution to parents; includes a brief overview of themes and events for the month.  (Seeks approval from director before distributing.)
  • Reflects excellent organizational skills throughout all facets of the program.
  • Supervises activities such as field trips, group discussions, and classroom activities to stimulate children’s interests and broaden their understanding of their physical and social environment.
  • Maintains effective, positive, and developmentally-appropriate student management techniques in all settings.
  • Supervises/leads/trains all personnel working within the classroom; Teacher Assistants/volunteers, etc.
  • Collects student work samples throughout the year and uses them as a portfolio for conferences.
  • Develops and maintains positive lines of communication with parents, including systematic methods and two-way options.
  • Conducts parent-teacher conferences at least twice a year (flexible times); advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress.
  • Maintains confidentiality relative to employee, student, parent(s) information;
  • Maintains an organized, attractive classroom that is inviting, bright, colorful, and interesting; displays student work effectively.
  • Keeps the classroom, closets, storage areas and bathrooms clean, neat, and tidy.
  • Sanitizes toys and equipment daily.
  • Responds to emergency situations and safety concerns as necessary and directs appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Accurately maintains/prepares, in a timely manner, all student records/reports/data required by the licensure, program and Board requirements.
  • Is prompt and regular in attendance.
  • Works closely with other lead teachers, assistant teachers, other staff, and parents to ensure a safe, loving, Christian environment for all children in the program.
  • Participates in the required number of hours of annual in-service training in child development, early childhood education, health/safety or related field.
  • Dresses appropriately for working professionally and safely with young children.
  • Maintains a high level of personal integrity and a strong work ethic.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Medical Requirements

  • DHS Childcare Provider Medical Report signed by physician
  • ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • agility to move quickly and keep up with toddlers

Additional Requirements

  • flexible with scheduling
  • able and willing to work with all children ages 6 weeks to 5 years
  • complete fingerprinting for background check
  • maintain current CPR/First Aid certification (expenses covered)
  • maintain current Professional Development hours required by DHS

Nice to Have

Qualifications

Meets at least one of the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field
  • Current CDA or Associate degree in related field
  • 4 years experience in an Early Childhood Education program
