About This Role

The NJ-EESS Substitute Service supports teachers and directors by helping create a caring and safe environment for children and assisting in activities that improve the overall quality of care and education. Substitutes must be able to communicate, listen, and work well with others in a team environment. Substitutes assist staff in implementing a quality educational program and developing positive relationships with children and families. Substitute Teachers/Substitute Classroom Support Staff are responsible for implementing developmentally appropriate activities based on children’s interests and needs under the direction of the Teacher, Director, or designated supervisor. Substitutes are connected to participating child care centers through NJ-EESS / 1Core SuperSub. During each accepted assignment, the substitute reports to the center Director or designated supervisor and follows the center’s policies, procedures, and classroom expectations.


This Position Reports to the Center Director or Designated Supervisor.

What You'll Do

  • Assist in the implementation of curricula activities and encourage participation by children.
  • Actively engage in activities; manage cleanliness, order, and availability of classroom materials.
  • Encourage self-help and good hygiene through behavior modeling.
  • Help ensure smooth daily transitions from home to the child care center.
  • Follow all center policies, classroom procedures, and state regulations.
  • Maintain active supervision of children at all times.
  • Follow child-to-staff ratio and supervision expectations.
  • Follow emergency, health, safety, and sanitation procedures.
  • Report safety concerns, injuries, or child concerns to the Director or lead teacher immediately.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and center information.
  • Maintain a personal professional development plan to ensure continuous quality improvement.

Substitutes are expected to participate in a brief center-specific orientation at each assignment, including review of classroom schedule, emergency procedures, allergies, health/safety expectations, and timekeeping/payroll procedures.

Requirements

  • Professional child care experience
  • High energy
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and basic computer skills
  • Access to email and internet
  • An understanding of child development
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Infant/child CPR and First Aid certification a plus
  • Professional Development as required by the Department of Human Services
  • Must provide past employment and personal references
  • Must clear a full background check
  • Must pass health screening

Must be able to safely interact with children at their level, including sitting on the floor, bending, kneeling, standing, walking, assisting with classroom routines, participating in indoor and outdoor play, and lifting up to 40 pounds when necessary and appropriate.


Substitute assignments are flexible and may include full-day, half-day, occasional, or recurring shifts. Substitutes may select available assignments through 1Core SuperSub based on location, schedule, and availability. Once a shift is accepted, the substitute is expected to report as scheduled and follow attendance/cancellation procedures.
