About This Role
This support staff member position at St. John's Lutheran ECEC in Alexandria offers $16 – $20/Hr. The role requires no formal early childhood credentials to start.
The Teacher Assistant supports the Lead Teacher and the Director by helping to create a caring and safe environment for the children and assisting in activities to improve the overall care and quality of education. They must be able to communicate, listen, and work well with others in a team environment. Assisting the staff in implementing a quality educational program and in developing positive relationships with the children and their parents, the Teacher Assistant observes and documents children’s interest and progress, and relays that information back to parents and staff. Teacher Assistants are responsible for implementing developmentally appropriate activities based on children’s interests and needs under the direction of the Lead Teacher and the Director.

What You'll Do
- Supervise the classroom, according to the plans of the lead teacher when the lead teacher is out or otherwise occupied.
- Help with daily activities, such as meals, small and large group activities, nap time, music and movement, art, outdoor play, and bathroom needs.
- Assist lead teacher in record keeping of daily student activities and observations related to children's development.
- Use materials, activities, and experiences to encourage children's growth and development.
- Help children regulate their behavior using a Christ-centered positive consistent approach.
- Assist the lead teacher in implementing the daily program by treating each child with dignity and respect, recognizing individual needs, helping the children to think creatively, to solve problems independently, and to respect themselves and others.
- Establish relationships with each family to ensure that their student's needs are met and maintained daily
- Assist lead teacher in assuring classroom bulletin boards are kept up to date with lesson plans, activity calendars, and meal schedules for parents.
Requirements
- Previous experience in childcare.
- Must be able to stand, bend, and sit for long periods of time and must be able to lift up to 50 lbs as it pertains to working in a classroom setting and with young children.
- Enthusiastic supporter of Christian mission.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with SJLC and ECEC staff, board members, and families.
- Passionate for Early Childhood Education.
- Cooperative and able to work in a team setting.
- Ability to adapt to changing conditions and needs.
Nice to Have
- Child Development Associate (CDA) or college classes in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, or Early Childhood Special Education.
- Active membership in a Christian congregation or willingness to join.

About St. John's Lutheran ECEC
Established in 1983, St. John's Lutheran Church's Early Childhood Education Center is a non-profit, private preschool center. We provide high quality, affordable, year-round, full-day program serving 50 students, ages 2-5. The center is financially sound, has an 18-member staff, and is supported by a Board of Operations and the Senior Pastor. Our mission is to learn and grow together through Christ-centered childcare.
